Why Helmet Safety Ratings Matter
When you pick a motorcycle helmet, the certification sticker on the inside is not just a formality — it is a guarantee that the shell, liner, retention system and visor have passed independent impact tests. In Hong Kong, helmets sold legally must meet recognised international standards. Here is what each rating means and why it matters to you.
ECE 22.06 — The Gold Standard for Street Riding
The UN ECE Regulation 22 (Revision 06), commonly called ECE 22.06, is the standard most widely adopted across Europe and Asia, including Hong Kong. Introduced in 2020, ECE 22.06 significantly raised the bar over the previous ECE 22.05 version:
- Higher-energy oblique (rotational) impact tests that simulate real-world crashes on angled surfaces
- Chin-bar protection requirements for full-face helmets
- Improved visor optical quality and locking tests
- Broader test area covering more of the helmet shell
All RD Helmet CZR and iD Helmet ZRO full-face helmets carry ECE 22.06 certification. The RD Helmet Air Force 1 open-face line also carries ECE certification suited to its shell design.
DOT (FMVSS 218) — The US Standard
The US Department of Transportation standard is self-certified by manufacturers rather than tested by an independent lab. DOT is the minimum legal requirement for riding in the United States. While DOT-only helmets are common globally, ECE 22.06 is generally considered more rigorous because it requires third-party laboratory testing.
SNELL — The Highest Voluntary Bar
SNELL Memorial Foundation certification is voluntary and requires passing very high-energy impact tests. SNELL M2020 is popular in track and racing contexts. Most street helmets prioritise ECE 22.06 because SNELL's rigid shell requirement can sometimes reduce rotational energy absorption — a trade-off that ECE 22.06 addresses directly with its oblique impact tests.

Which Standard Should Hong Kong Riders Choose?
For daily street and commuter riding in Hong Kong, ECE 22.06 is the recommended standard. It reflects the most current understanding of crash biomechanics and is enforced through independent testing. If you ride on track days, look for a SNELL or FIM-homologated option.
